Eternals in a one-liner

This is an American superhero as well sci-fi film. You will resonate with the movie’s storyline if you have frequent zombie dreams.

Eternals are aliens who have gained immortality and are alien versions of the super forces destined to save the Earth from its enemy – The Deviants.

These aliens were hidden, but the time had finally come for them to arrive and save the Earth from the apocalypse.

Even if the storyline might not seem catchy, as argued by some audiences, the cast’s stellar performance is the film’s beauty.

The cast includes Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Harish Patel, Don Lee, Barry Keoghan, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Madden, and Gemma Chan.

The stardust of these superb artists has magically transformed the film’s effect on the audience.

Plot

The ancient times

Deviants have constantly threatened life on Earth since the dawn of civilization. It is in the very beginning of the civilization, in around 5000 BC, Celestial Arishem had sent a group of ten Eternals to save the Earth from Deviants.

This group of Eternals included Thena, Gilgamesh, Druig, Makkari, Phastos, Sprite, Kingo, Ikarish, Sersi, and Ajak. They boarded their beloved starship, the Domo, to slaughter Deviants.

The present times

Till 1521, they obediently carry out their orders of exterminating Deviants. However, in the year 1521, they had conflicts of interest regarding their relationship dynamics with humans. Hence, they started living apart while waiting for further orders from Arishem.

Cut to the present times. London becomes the center where Sprite and Sersi live together. This might remind you of the separate living of the characters of Money Heist until Professor hatches a new heist and summons them all. Similarly, the Eternals also started living apart.

Ikaris was in a relationship with Sersi. However, following their break up, Sersi is now in a loving relationship with Dane Whitman, a human working at Natural History Museum. But they cannot live in peace when a Deviant Krio comes and attacks the three. However, this attack brings Ikaris to the scene, who chases Krio away.

Sersi, Ikaris, and Sprite go to South Dakota to find their leader Ajak. Meanwhile, she died, making Sersi the leader with the ability to talk to Arishem.

Upon communicating with Arishem, Sersi understands that the mission of the Eternals was to make the Earth equipped for the Emergence. Arishem had set the stage for the birth of New Celestials.

Meanwhile, the Deviants evolved and destroyed the native populations of planets. It was only then that Arishem gave birth to Eternals as a counter-force to Deviants. The birth of Tiamut, a Celestial, will lead to Earth’s destruction, and the time for its emergence has arrived.

The Emergence

The following premise for further action is Druig’s house in the Amazon rainforest, where the Eternals gather to delay the much-apprehended Emergence.

The Deviants attack them, and everyone gets killed except Kro. Kro kills Gilgamesh. Phastos devise a plan to gather so much energy in Druig to keep Tiamut asleep for some time. But, Ikaris reveals that he knew about the emergence much earlier as Ajak had confided in him.

Makkari discovers that Emergence is located in an active volcano in the Indian Ocean. Sprite and Ikaris, now reunited, try to stop them. Thena kills Kro, Druig disarms Sprite and Phastos does the same to Ikaris.

However, Druig cannot put Tiamut to sleep, as per plan. But, Sersi powers up to turn Tiamut into a marble.

Sersi also turns Sprite permanently into a human by making use of her remaining energy. Makkari, Druig, and Thena again summon Domo and embarks on a quest to find and warn other planets’ eternals. Kingo, Phastos, and Sersi stay back on Earth.

The final answer

In a moment of climax, Arishem lifts Kingo, Phastos, and Sersi into space when Dane confesses to Sersi.

Sersi was on the verge of spilling something about their family history. Highly angered with the treason, Arishem states that humanity will only be spared if Eternals’ memories prove their worth.

In the characteristic mid-credits scene. We see Druig, Makkari, and Thena have met Eros, brother of Thanos, and pip The Troll.

In the post-credit scene, Dane comes in contact with a case having the Ebony Blade when a person the audience cannot see asks him if he is ready!

Thus, your question is Eternals on Disney Plus led us to the entire storyline of the same, and rightfully so! But let’s now try and find an answer to that!

Eternals Cast

While discussing extensively where to watch Eternals, the splendid performance of the cast lapsed our attention. So, let us now spend some time with them!

Sersi

The character of Sersi, a compassionate Eternal, is played by Gemma Chan. She has a strong bond with Earth and humanity. She has the superpower to transform any matter through body contact.

While bonding with Sprite, she is deeply in love with Ikaris. However, in the present day, she loves a human named Dane. Thus, Chan’s craftsmanship brought a certain gentleness and vulnerability to Sersi.

Ikaris

Played by Richard Madden, Ikaris equipped with projecting cosmic rays with his eyes. Unlike Sersi, he doesn’t have a deep connection with humans.

According to Madden’s interpretation, Ikaris and Sersi shared a deep sense of love. Thus, Richard Madden skilfully portrayed Ikaris as someone to be a little stoic and skeptical.

Kingo

Kumail Nanjiani played the role of Kingo, equipped to radiate cosmic rays with his bare hands. In his life on Earth, he became a Bollywood star.

John McClane’s character in Die Hard heavily inspired Nanjiani, who looked like Hrithik Roshan, a famous Bollywood hero. He also learned Bollywood dancing for the role.

Sprite

Lia McHugh played Sprite’s character, who has the superpower to create illusions. Even if she has the appearance of a young girl, inside her, there is an old soul frustrated with humanity.

She is more like Tinker Bell in the Peter Pan world and McHugh’s primary inspiration came from Neil Gaiman’s take on the character.

Phastos

Brian Tyree Henry played the character of Phastos, a deft technology inventor who is very adept at handling intelligent weapons.

Makkari

A superhuman capable of running at enormous speed, Lauren Ridloff plays the character of Makkari. Also, MCU can be credited with being a little inclusive in its characterization, as Makkari is the first deaf superhero. Also, we imagine a fast runner to be a male in the first place. But, Makkari is a female with superhuman running speed.

Druig

Druig is an Eternal who is a little aloof, and Barry Keoghan plays his role.

Gilgamesh

Don Lee plays the character of Gilgamesh, who deeply bonds with Thena. One of the main reasons for Lee to play this role was to inspire youngsters, as she was the first Korean superhero.

Thena

Angelina Jolie plays the role of Thena, a very elite warrior. Her superpower lies in the fact that she can make any weapon out of cosmic energy.

She has a deep bond with Thena. Angelina Jolie trained hard to learn the use of spears and swords. She also had to learn ballet for the role.

Ajak

Ajak is the leader of the Eternals, and Salma Hayek plays her role. She is the bridge between the Celestials and the Eternals. Ajak also is equipped with the power to heal.

In the original comics, the role was assigned to a male. However, in the film, Ajak is a female character. Hayek initially didn’t want to play the role as she thought it would evoke an essence of a grandmother character. However, finally, she agreed to play along.

Others

Bill Skarsgard gives voice to the role of Kro, the Deviant. David Kaye gives voice to Arishem. Kit Harington plays the role of Dane Whitman, the lover of Sersi.

So, with this stellar cast, the performance of the Eternals fared pretty well. It accrued $164.9 million in the United States of America and Canada. It was also the second-largest opening weekend worldwide after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Final Thoughts

There has been much debate among critics regarding Eternals. But still, many fans seem to ask, is Eternals on Disney Plus?

So, if you are a fan of visual effects and want to give your imagination a free ride, Eternals can be on your watchlist.
